POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Cloud & Infrastructure Engineer
Division: IT Services
Reports to: Enterprise Infrastructure Manager
Role Overview
Experience/ Qualifications and Required Skills:
- Grade 12/Matric Certificate
- Azure certification required (AZ‑104, AZ‑305, AZ‑500, AZ‑900 or similar).
- AWS and/or GCP knowledge or certifications beneficial but not required.
- 10+ years general IT experience across cloud, infrastructure, operations, networking, and security.
- 3+ years cloud engineering experience, including architecture, deployment, and administration.
- Strong experience with:
- IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS
- Azure Functions, App Services, Service Plans, Elastic Plans
- Azure SQL, Azure Storage, Azure Monitor
- Windows Server, AD/Group Policy, DNS/DHCP
- VMware or Hyper‑V
- Storage platforms (SAN, NAS, cloud storage)
- Backup technologies & DR tools
- Strong understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, firewalls, routing, switching, VPNs).
- Experience integrating hybrid identity (AAD Connect, Entra ID).
- Experience with DevOps, CI/CD, scripting and IaC tools (PowerShell, Terraform, ARM/Bicep).
- Strong knowledge of cybersecurity principles, hardening standards, patching, vulnerability remediation.
Key Responsibilities
- Cloud Engineering & Architecture:
- Design, develop, deploy, and maintain Azure cloud solutions including IaaS, PaaS, serverless computing, networking, and storage services.
- Review and optimise existing cloud environments for performance, scalability, cost, and security.
- Implement cloud governance policies, tagging standards, FinOps practices, and least‑privilege access frameworks.
- Manage cloud resources such as Azure Functions, App Services, API Management, Azure SQL, VNETs, NSGs, ASGs, Azure Firewall, etc.
- On‑Premise Infrastructure Engineering:
- Support, administer, and modernise on‑premise environments including:
- Windows Server platforms (2012–2025)
- Active Directory, Group Policy, DHCP, DNS, Certificate Services
- VMware/Hyper‑V virtualisation
- Physical & virtual storage platforms (SAN, NAS, iSCSI, tiered storage)
- Backup, DR sites, replication systems, and business continuity infrastructure
- Perform capacity planning, monitoring, optimisation, and lifecycle management of datacentre assets.
- Troubleshoot complex infrastructure and application‑hosting issues.
- Hybrid Cloud Integration & Systems Modernisation:
- Lead integration between cloud and on‑premise environments (e.g., ExpressRoute, VPN gateways, Azure Arc, hybrid identity).
- Support migration projects for applications, databases, and workloads from on‑premise to cloud.
- Implement modernisation initiatives (e.g., containerisation, serverless, refactoring legacy applications where feasible).
- Security, Compliance & Governance:
- Ensure infrastructure compliance with relevant standards:
- ISO 27001, POPIA, internal cybersecurity policies, industry best practices.
- Collaborate with Information Security to remediate vulnerabilities and enforce security baselines.
- Apply identity and access management principles (RBAC, conditional access, privileged identity controls).
- Maintain secure configurations, patch management, and monitoring practices.
- Networking & Connectivity:
- Support LAN, WAN, VLAN, routing, switching, and firewall functions across cloud and on‑premise networks.
- Implement secure hybrid networking models and review firewall/NAT rules for required services.
- Troubleshoot network performance problems across multiple layers (L2–L7).
- Digital Transformation, Automation & AI Enablement:
- Demonstrated ability to apply AI‑driven tools, automation and modern digital practices to optimise infrastructure operations, enhance reliability, and support the organisation’s digital transformation strategy.
- Able to identify opportunities for AI‑assisted improvements, implement intelligent monitoring and automation, and stay current with emerging technologies.
- Develop solutions using PowerShell, Azure CLI, Terraform, ARM/Bicep, or similar tools.
- Work with CI/CD platforms (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Jenkins) to streamline deployments.
- Implement configuration management, standardisation, and infrastructure-as-code practices.
- Monitoring, Reliability & Support:
- Implement centralised monitoring, observability, alerting, and logging across environments.
- Troubleshoot cross-system performance issues (cloud workloads, VMs, applications, networks).
- Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, capacity planning, and architectural improvement cycles.
- Provide 3rd‑line support and act as the SME for escalated technical issues.
- Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration:
- Work closely with application teams, security teams, infrastructure teams, and vendors.
- Translate business and application requirements into technical infrastructure solutions.
- Provide thought leadership, training, and technical guidance to internal teams.
- Manage client/user expectations and ensure service‑quality alignment with business needs.
