Job Title: Kennel Assistant
Job Overview:
The Kennel Assistant at the Sasol K9 Unit plays a critical role in maintaining the health, safety, and hygiene of security dogs and their environment. The role involves daily cleaning, feeding, exercising, and assisting handlers in training duties. The position is physically demanding and requires dedication, reliability, and a love for working with animals.
Minimum Requirements:
- PSIRA Certification
- Must have valid PSIRA Grade C registration.
- Dog Handling Certification
- Minimum of DH2 (Dog Handler Level 2) required.
- DH3 or higher will be an advantage.
- Physical Fitness
- Must be physically fit and capable of performing strenuous tasks such as walking, lifting, restraining dogs, and manual cleaning.
- Animal Handling Experience
- Prior experience working with dogs, especially large or working breeds, is essential.
- Experience in a kennel, vet, or similar environment is preferred.
- Criminal Record
- A clean criminal record is mandatory (background checks will be conducted).
- Language Proficiency
- Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
- Additional Attributes
- Reliable, punctual, and disciplined.
- Calm and confident around animals.
- Able to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
- Willing to work weekends, holidays, and be available on standby as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Daily cleaning and sanitation of dog kennels and surrounding areas.
- Daily feeding and watering of dogs.
- Exercising dogs under supervision.
- Report any injuries, illnesses, or abnormal behaviour to the Kennel Master.
- Assist with dog training and socialization, if required.
- Safely handle dogs for grooming, dipping, vet visits, and medical checks.
- Maintain hygiene of food and water bowls, fly traps, and general kennel environment.
Core Processes:
- Clean kennels twice daily (morning and afternoon) using disinfectant and high-pressure cleaning equipment.
- Spend a minimum of 3 hours cleaning kennels in the morning.
- Inspect perimeter fences and training grounds daily for potential threats (holes, poison, foreign objects).
- Administer medication to dogs as per instructions.
- Ensure offices, vehicles, and surrounding areas are cleaned and presentable.
- Participate in narcotic or explosive detection training, tracker dog scent trails, and patrol dog agitation exercises.
- Adhere strictly to SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment) policies and standards
Working Conditions:
- Must be available to work rotating weekends, holidays, and respond to emergencies.
- Environment includes exposure to noise, animal waste, cleaning chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions.
